Helpful Hints On Managing Panic Attacks And Phobias

By Bruce Wiley

Sometimes, overcoming your phobias is a difficult task. Finding out what exactly is your fear is one of the ways that you can manage your particular phobia. If you have trouble finding out what that fear may be, then try to talk to a professional who can help you figure out what the fear may be. Once you know what exactly the fear is, the next step would involve finding the ways to deal with that fear.

For instance, one of the ways to manage your fear is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking. When encountering thoughts that make your fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense. For example, if you're afraid that if you do not get that job promotion then you will be stuck at your job forever. Your thinking in this situation is realistic even though it may seem depressing. There all are kinds of jobs available and just because you don't get this job promotion doesn't mean that you will never get one. In addition, people change jobs all the time, and you always have that option of going elsewhere if you are unhappy at your present location. If you change your way of thinking, this will then help you manage your fears.

Being nervous is sometimes a possibility when we are doing a certain task that may be scary. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. An example would be you and your team playing in the championship hockey game in the next few days in front of a large group of people. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that your playing in front of a large audience. If you play the game in your mind, then when the time comes you will be better prepared to perform for real. A great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation is self visualization.

Divide the task into a series of smaller steps when you are facing a current upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety and then one at a time, you can complete the smaller tasks. If you complete these smaller tasks, the stress will then be more manageable and your chances of success will increase.

Of course, you must keep in mind that it is not easy to overcome our phobias. Also, because of our fears and worries, there are times when the problem could become worse. Take things in stride and try not focus too much on the problem. The time will come when you will find ways to overcome your phobia. If you have trouble, then talking to a professional who can give you more insights on your situation is a good idea.
