Tips for Making a Great Outdoor Area

By Peter Rockwell

Developing an outdoor space can be a great undertaking. Building a tranquil and enjoyable spot for your loved ones to gather can feel intimidating, at first. Make the task easy by considering the space like you would another room in your house. Thinking of the space in this manner could help you to pull it together with less effort. Assess the space you will make use of. Begin by measuring the space as a whole.

The entire space measurements are necessary in order to give you an overall sense of the size of furniture to use. By taking this step, you have given yourself the proper scale of furniture and fittings to work with when picking out planters, barbeques, furniture and other outdoor accessories. After this, make an assessment of your area by thinking through 'things to consider'. Note the cardinal directions (west, south, east, north) and add to your sketch such things as sun exposure, which direction winds usually occur, shady areas and anything else which influences your space. Make use of nature's gifts when plotting out your space.

You are ready to begin you wish list. Be practical when making your list. Think through the way you want to use this space. What will the space primarily be used for? Will it be outdoor dining, gatherings, or relaxation with loved ones? Use this data to write your list. Decide what types of outdoor furniture you will want or need. Sketch out where each piece will be. Remember a few tips as you plan. Allocate enough room for people to comfortably circulate without becoming stuck behind furniture or accessories. Include plenty of seating to allow your guests to remain comfortable. Consider the views that your guests will be able to enjoy from each seat.

Make you layout conducive to conversation. Keep the majority of your seating facing towards each other and within six to eight feet apart. Have focal points built in to your space where each seated guest has something visual to enjoy. Actually sit in each lounge chair, couch or swing yourself to help with this planning a visualization.

Lastly, be attentive of how you will accommodate for wind and shade. To allow comfort, you will want to keep your guests from sweltering on hot days and becoming saturated in a drizzle. So, be ready with some relief. Countless varieties of umbrellas are available for this reason. They are made to be out of the way until opened up when needed. Much like people, your outdoor furniture is exposed to the elements. This is a great reason to Invest in covers for your patio furniture to prolong its life. Cover everything, so nothing is unprotected; pick up seating covers, barbeque grill covers, and umbrella covers. This keeps your space tidy and ready to be used at any time.
