Five Ways to Save Energy at Home

By Angie Meza

No matter where you live in this fabulous nation and no matter what time of your it is, you will find that saving money by cutting down on energy never goes out of fashion. For example, you might live up north and be getting ready to deal with the expensive winter season. You might live in the Sunbelt and be gearing up for the expensive air-conditioning during the hot summer. Either way, you have got to be ready.

How about considering these five ways to save energy at home that aren't very expensive to put into place? You will find that valuable dollars are accumulating in your pocketbook whenever the monthly utility bill comes in the mail.

A great way to save energy at home is to turn down the temperature on your water heater. If you've ever turned the hot water tap on and jumped back quickly because it burned your hand, then it's pretty obvious. You are heating up the temperature to a degree that is not necessary. You could save up to 25% of your energy, because electrically heating water is very expensive.

There is no point in you using the washer and dryer constantly, either. Coordinating with other members of the family will help you. Don't use these units for each member of the family exclusively, as if you consolidate it would be much better. Also, save money by washing your clothes only in cold water.

Use ceiling fans properly. Make sure that they are adjusted to push the air around your room in the correct direction during each particular season. Turn your thermostat up a degree or two and put your ceiling fans on a higher cycle, to save money.

You need to look for any leaks in and around your home. Check all your doors and windows and make sure that you have a product in place to prevent drafts. A purpose made, flexible draft stopper can be purchased very economically, to place in areas where you find a problem.

Number one on your list of five ways to save energy at home is a simple one. Just go around the home and unplug everything that you can see. Does the computer need to be switched on and left "asleep" at night? Anything that is plugged in is using a trickle of energy constantly.

As you can see, by taking relatively small amounts of action you can make a big difference. Little by little you will see that your bill is going down as you save more and more energy at home.
